Thailand Health Insurance Premiums

CCW Global, and our local insurance partners, can arrange both Thailand and international health insurance with highly competitive premium levels.

With years of experience in the Thailand health insurance market, and the wider international health insurance industry, we are able to offer an extensive product portfolio unmatched in the region. This allows you to access a broad range of coverage and premium options designed to meet a variety of budgets and individual requirements. Generally, the Thailand health insurance plans offered by CCW and our local partners are international health insurance policies.

As a result, unlike locally priced medical plans, premiums are generally set on a community‑rated basis. This means people of the same age, on the same benefits and area of cover, pay the same rate, delivering predictable pricing without penalties for individual claims.

Explanation

Community Rated Insurance Premiums

As mentioned earlier, the majority of Thailand health insurance plans offered by CCW Global and our local insurance partners operate on a community-rated premium basis. This means that all individuals of the same age, with identical coverage areas and benefit levels, will pay the same premium amount; regardless of whether or not they have made claims.

With a community rating structure, your personal claims history will never affect your policy cost. This provides peace of mind, allowing you to use your health insurance when needed without worrying about future price hikes as a result.

Premium adjustments under community rated plans are only influenced by two key factors: your age and the overall rise in healthcare costs. As you grow older, or as medical inflation increases, your premium may rise accordingly; but these increases are shared evenly across all members within the same rating group. In effect, this means that if your premium goes up, so does everyone else's who shares your demographic and coverage profile.

The principle behind community-rated health insurance is to distribute risk across a larger pool of policyholders. This structure not only supports higher levels of coverage but also helps to keep premiums more consistent and predictable compared to experience-rated plans, where an individual's claims history directly influences the cost of their policy.

Premiums and Age

Your age is one of the most important factors in determining the premium of a Thailand health insurance plan.

As individuals grow older, their risk of developing a serious or chronic health conditions increases. This heightened risk means that older policyholders are more likely to require medical treatment, potentially more frequently and at a higher cost. To reflect this increased likelihood of claims, premiums will naturally rise with age.

Under the most international health insurance plans, your premium will be adjusted based on your age bracket. These adjustments are built into the structure of the policy and ensure that the insurer can adequately cover the potential cost of healthcare at each stage of life.

As such, it’s expected that your policy premium will increase as you get older.

Coverage Areas

The geographical area covered by your Thailand health insurance policy will also influence the premium you pay. This is because healthcare costs can vary widely between countries and regions.

A Thailand, or international, medical insurance plan that includes worldwide coverage will generally come with a higher premium than a plan that excludes certain high-cost regions; most notably the United States.

The reason for this is simple; the United States has the highest average healthcare expenses globally. Including it in your coverage means the insurer must account for the potential of covering costly treatments, which drives up the overall premium.

If you're looking to reduce the cost of your policy, one effective way is to limit the coverage area. By excluding specific countries or regions, especially those with high medical costs, you can lower your premium substantially while still maintaining the protection you need in the areas where you're most likely to receive care.

Plan Coverage and Premiums

Put simply, the broader and more comprehensive your Thailand health insurance coverage is, the more you can expect to pay in annual premiums.

For example, someone who selects an Inpatient-Only plan (covering only hospital admissions and major medical events) will generally enjoy a lower premium than someone who opts for a more expansive policy that includes Outpatient treatment, Maternity care, and Alternative Therapies.

Even if both individuals are the same age, and have policies that cover the same regions, the person with the more inclusive coverage package will face a higher premium. This is because the insurer is taking on a greater share of risk and cost by covering a wider range of healthcare services.
