Overview

Employee's Compensation Insurance in Thailand

In Thailand, employers are legally obligated to compensate employees (or their dependents) in cases where a worker suffers injury or death in the course of their regular job duties. This obligation applies regardless of the industry or job function and is enforced through the country’s Workers’ Compensation Fund (WCF).

The Thai Workers’ Compensation Fund is a mandatory scheme that all businesses must contribute to annually, provided they employ at least one individual. Managed by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the WCF provides a statutory level of financial support for injured employees, covering medical expenses, rehabilitation, income replacement, and death benefits.

However, while the WCF forms the legal minimum standard, many Thai employers opt to go further by securing Voluntary Workers’ Compensation and Employer’s Liability Insurance. These additional policies offer more extensive coverage than what is available through the government fund, helping to bridge any gaps and protect businesses from significant financial exposure.

Voluntary plans are particularly valuable in situations involving high-risk professions, expatriate employees, or when seeking faster, more flexible claims handling. By supplementing the statutory system, Thai businesses can ensure a more robust safety net is in place for both their workforce and their own liability risks.

Employees' Compensation Insurance Limits

While the coverage under Thailand’s Employee Compensation ordinance is based around a scale which incorporates a number of variables, such as the age of the employee and the extent of their injury, Thai insurance companies will normally provide Employee Compensation insurance coverage in the range of Baht 1,500,000 for any one claim event.
